Cancer has become a major public health problem affecting human health and national economic and social development. According to the "2020 Global Cancer Report", in 2002, the number of new cancer cases in the world was 19.29 million, and the number of deaths was 9.96 million. China ranked first in the world. Cancer survival rate is closely related to cancer staging, and it is urgent to improve the early screening and early diagnosis of cancer.

The National Cancer Registry of China, in conjunction with the Cancer Hospital of the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences and Peking Union Medical College, analyzed the electronic medical records of cancer patients registered in 12 provinces and 23 regional hospitals in China from January 2016 to December 2017, as well as the records of cancer registration centers. The results were published in The Lancet Public Health. The study found that 52.8%(22009/41671) of the five major cancers in China, including lung cancer, gastric cancer, esophageal cancer, colorectal cancer and female breast cancer, were already in the advanced stage (III-IV stage) as soon as they were diagnosed. Further research determined the stage distribution and related factors at the time of cancer diagnosis, including cancer type, gender, region, age, living habits, etc, the study suggests that China urgently needs to raise awareness of cancer prevention and implement early cancer screening.
